Dior Haute Couture Spring Summer 09

Hey guys, I'm back again and so is Galliano with the newest Haute Couture collection. Galliano was asked the question "What do you think about the recession?" to which he really provided a great answer: "There's a credit crunch, not a creative crunch. Of course, everyone is being more careful with their discretionary purchases. I am. But it's our job to make people dream, and to provide the value in quality, cut, and imagination."

Indeed, this is exactly how a designer should provide to his clients. To me, this collection is not one of my favourites, but it's also not one which I find disappointing. In fact, it seems to be lovelier when you view it again and again.

Galliano's inspiration came from Flemish painters and Monsieur Dior, and he chose to use solid colours of gold and soft blues of Vermeer at the start of the collection towards the middle. I don't really find those pieces outstanding, but the elaborate lace collars and sleeves were just fantastic.

Of the entire collection, my favourite pieces would have to be those in ivory and black, not forgetting some with the flowery prints and embroideries. The collection seemed to get better when Galliano didn't stick so closely to his inspiration. Here are some of the best pieces of this collection.

Hey everyone!!! Today is the start of 2009 and this is my very first post of this year. As we all know, everyone needs a makeover from time to time, and so do blogs. After so long, I finally have a blogskin on my blog and I would like to thank Sophia, Kasey who helped me and whoever created this blogskin.

Now for some good news! Firstly, I can finally link people on my blog. So if you would like me to link you, just tag on my tagboard or tell me on MSN and I will do so. Next, I added this fake iPod Touch-looking thingy. I hope you guys will like the music that's on it.

I really hope that my blog, with a makeover and all, will inspire me to continue design more stuff and post them here. I also hope I can post frequently here for all you crazy fashion fanatics and not let the blog go stale.

Dior Haute Couture Fall Winter 0809

Yay, a post from me again. The difference isn't that big, just two months. And anyway, I'm having a fever today so you gotta thank me more because I managed to post something.

I have to say, this collection is not crazy enough for me, but somehow it looks really nice, especially towards the end where all the gowns start coming out. Some gowns are heavenly, but others are plain weird. Overall, I think Galliano managed to shine in this collection; it must be the choice of colours and fabrics. The transition from bold colours on harder fabrics at the start to more pastel-like on soft, flowy fabrics towards the end make this collection one of his best. I've picked out the best pieces.

Okay, first of all, I'm super super sorry for not blogging for that long. I know some people wanna kill me already. So, this is sort of my 'comeback'.

Anyways, Galliano for Dior has his ups and downs at times. And this is one of his down moments. I have to say that I'm not very impressed with this collection, in fact, I'm a little disappointed with it. Some pieces shorten the models, some pieces just make the models look like they have no figure, while some are created from fabrics which are just totally wrong. I guess this is why it's called haute couture, but I think that this collection has not been done well enough as compared to his previous collections.

I think the saving grace of this collection is not the design/shape of the pieces but the details. I have handpicked some pieces which I think are the best among the rest. I urge you not to look at the models for some because the pieces actually look better than them. Enjoy.

For this entry, we have a question pertaining to haute couture.

Q: Since haute couture dresses are so hard to walk in, are there any specific fabric or sewing tricks that the designer uses to help the models walk more comfortably?

A: I have to clear a misconception about haute couture first. Haute couture dresses are one of a kind in the world and designers use expensive fabrics to create them, hence it is very costly. Another reason why it may be costly is because the designers spend lots of time sewing the dresses. For a dress to be considered haute couture, it has to be hand-sewn by the designer and not by a sewing machine.

Not all haute couture dresses are hard to walk in. Perhaps you may have been under the impression that all haute couture dresses are like Dior's or Jean Paul Gaultier's, but NO, not all haute couture dresses are like that. For example, Valentino's designs are not as crazy as Dior's or Gaultier's.

The reason for why Dior's haute couture dresses are that flamboyant and crazy is because Dior's designer John Galliano comes up with crazy ideas for his haute couture shows, which may seem to be theatrical. But again, to emphasise, not all haute couture dresses are like that.

As for the sewing tricks that the designers use, there are specific sewing techniques used for couture dresses. But for whether the specific tricks are used to help the models walk more comfortably, as not all haute couture gowns are difficult to walk in, the answer will most probably be no.

For this new section, I will be answering any questions YOU have pertaining to FASHION.

Q: How do I wear an empire dress without looking like I have a thick waist?

A: Well, that's quite a good question that I think will apply to many of you out there. As you may know, empire dresses are dresses which flairs right after the bust area. Thus they are called the empire dress, mainly because of the empire waist design.

Now, many women worry that the flair of the dress causes them to look plump. Here are six words that you should consider: Don't Bring Attention To Your Waist.

It's very important for you to do that. You could start by losing the idea of adding a belt to your waist. That would mean accentuating your figure which will being attention to your waist. You may do that if you feel secure, though.

You may also add fashion accessories like necklaces or bracelets to divert the attention. They come in handy most of the time. Shawls and scarves do the trick too. Remember, you should only use them when appropriate. A simple clutch or purse completes the whole look.

Just make sure that there isn't too much going on, otherwise you'll end up looking like a Christmas tree. That's a definite no-no. Another alternative way not to look like you have a thick waist is to choose an empire dress with the right flair. It would be great if you could find a dress that isn't too waist-hugging.

Mr. Designer Designs

Due to popular demand, a new section for this blog has been set up. Almost everyone's been complaining how come I hardly post my own designs and only post other designer's designs. So, to satisfy everyone, I'm gonna post one design below. Please click on it. It looks much more flattering when it has the whole window to itself.

This design has two gloves along with the gown itself. Fur is attached to the two gloves and the bottom of the gown too. The halter for the gown is of chains, there are also chains surrounding the dress around the waist area and the leg area too. A zip is used for the bust area. I haven't decided on the colour and the choice of fabric though.

Know Your Designer: Chanel

The House of Chanel (say sher-nell), more commonly known as Chanel, is a Parisian fashion house in France founded in 1910 by Gabrielle Bonheur 'Coco' Chanel. This fashion house started off as a small shop selling ladies head wear then became especially famous with the elegant LBD (Little Black Dress) in 1926, tweed suit and it's signature No. 5 fragrance in 1921.

Chanel revolutionised haute couture fashion by completely replacing the traditional corset with the comfort and casual elegance of simple suits and dresses. Coco Chanel introduced the world to her signature cardigan jacket in 1925 and the 'Chanel suit', an elegant creation composed of a knee-length and trim, boxy jacket, traditionally made of woven wool with black sewing trim and gold buttons, worn with large costume-pearl necklaces.

Elite women of high societies around the world began flocking to her boutique to commission couture outfits from her. The House of Chanel became an icon of elegance and from then on, the name 'Chanel' became synonymous to elegance, wealth, and elitism as well as the ultimate sign of French high class, la coquetterie.

Chanel is also known for its quilted fabric which also has a 'secret' quilting pattern sewn at the back to keep the material strong. This material is used for clothing and accessories alike. The brand is now headed by German-born designer, Karl Lagerfeld who had previously designed for the House of Fendi, where his most memorable achievement was the creation of the signature 'FF' logo print (referred to as Zucca) commonly used on handbags.

Coco Chanel began her fashion career in 1910. She heralded new designs and revolutionized the fashion industry by going 'back to basics', incorporating elegance, class, and originality. Under her tight reign from 1910 to 1971, Coco Chanel held the title as 'Chief Designer' until her death on January 10, 1971. From then on, Karl Lagerfeld took charge. With his flashy sense of style combined with a strong vision of a new Chanel, he brought the couture house to new levels, and is still continuing to woo and awe the fashion world.

Know Your Designer: Dolce & Gabbana

Dolce & Gabbana (say dol-chay n ge-ba-na), or D&G, more commonly known, is a high-end Italian label. The designers are Domenico Dolce, born near Palermo, Sicily and Stefano Gabbana, born in Milan, Italy.

They are very familiar for their designs in the Hollywood industry and have designed for Ayumi Hamasaki, Madonna and more. Their company is based in Milan.

Dolce & Gabbana is organised into two central lines for adults: D&G and Dolce&Gabbana. D&G is the more casual line with slightly cheaper prices; it follows the trends of culture of the time and is trendsetting.

Dolce&Gabbana centralises on luxury materials and it's more expensive than D&G. This line doesn't change as much as the former and it is influenced by sartorial designs; it is also described as 'timeless' by Dolce&Gabbana. Dolce&Gabbana purses have an exclusive stamp on the inside too.

D&G Junior is a separate line for children under the age of 13. D&G Junior follows the ethos of D&G and it embodies youth and fun with the styles of its clothes. Each season follows a set-named trend for that particular season and it is named separately for boys and girls.

Know Your Designer: Christian Dior

Christian Dior is a French label and it's designer was actually Christian Dior himself instead of John Galliano, as many of you know it now. He was born in 1905 and passed away in 1957. In his time, he was also considered as an influential French fashion designer.

He attended Ecole des Sciences Politiques from 1920 to 1925 against his own wishes and his parents actually wanted him to become a diplomat. In 1928, he opened his own art gallery but shut it down due to a family disaster. He got involved in designing in the 1930s when he did sketches for haute couture houses.

His luck changed in 1945 when he designed for Marcel Boussac who made a fortune from fabrics. Marcel Boussac was interested in his new idea that involved using lots of layers of extravagant fabrics. Dior's very first collection, Corolle Line, premiered in 1947. He then established his main fashion house, Christian Dior New York Inc. in 1949.

Corolle Line was actually first presented in February 12. The look was refreshing pens and much more voluptuous than the boxy shapes of the recent World War 2 styles. His look employed fabrics lined predominantly with percale, boned, bustier-style bodices, hip padding, wasp-waisted corsets and petticoats that made his dresses flare out from the waist giving his models a very curvaceous form.

The hem of the skirt was very flattering on the calves and ankles, giving a beautiful silhouette. At first, there was some backlash to Dior's genius form because of the amount of fabrics used in a single dress or suit, but as soon as the War Time Shortages came to an end, opposition ceased. His designs represented consistent classic elegance, stressing the feminine look.

Because of that, he revolutionised women's dresses and reestablished Paris as the center of the fashion world. Throughout the 1950s, Christian Dior was the biggest and best-run haute couture house in Paris. One of his closest rivals was the enigmatic Spanish designer, Cristobal Balenciaga.

As the most prestigious Paris couture house, Christian Dior attracted the most talented assistants. One was Pierre Cardin, an Italian-born tailor who was Dior’s star assistant in the late 1940s before leaving to begin his own business. Another was Yves Saint Laurent, a gifted young Algeria-born designer who joined in 1955 as the star graduate of the Chambre Syndicale fashion school.

As timid as Dior himself, the young Saint Laurent flourished in the feminine atmosphere of the couture house and contributed thirty-five outfits for the autumn 1957 collection. When all the fittings for the collection were finished, Dior took off for a rest cure at his favourite spa town of Montecatini in northern Italy hoping to lose weight in order to impress a young lover.

Ten days later Dior died of a heart attack after choking on a fishbone at dinner. The French newspaper Le Monde hailed him as a man who was “identified with good taste, the art of living and refined culture that epitomises Paris to the outside world”. Marcel Boussac sent his private plane to Montecatini to bring Dior’s body back to Paris. Some 2,500 people attended his funeral including all his staff and famous clients led by the Duchess of Windsor.

A fortnight after the burial of Dior, Jacques Rouët called a press conference to announce the new structure of the house of Christian Dior. “The studio will be run by Madame Zehnmacker, the couture workshops by Madame Marguerite Carré,” he announced. “Mitza Bricard will continue to exercise her good taste over the collections. All the sketches will be the responsibility of Yves Mathieu-Saint-Laurent.”

The first Christian Dior collection after Dior’s death was a sensation. Designed in just nine weeks by the 21 year-old Yves Saint Laurent, as he was called after dropping the ‘Mathieu’, the clothes were as meticulously made and perfectly proportioned as Dior’s in the same exquisite fabrics, but their young designer made them softer, lighter and easier to wear.

Yves Saint Laurent was conscripted in the army and, after demobilisation, opened his own couture house. He was replaced at Dior by Marc Bohan, who instilled his conservative style on the collections until 1988 when Italian Gianfranco Ferre took over as head designer until 1995. In 1996, John Galliano, was appointed chief designer of Christian Dior by the company’s new owner, the LVMH luxury goods group.

Know Your Designer: Versace

Versace is an Italian label and the original designer was actually Gianni Versace instead of Donatella Versace. Their mother was a dressmaker and Gianni began his apprenticeship at a young age, helping her in embroidering of dresses. However, Gianni studied architecture before fashion design.

Gianni considered himself more of a tailor than a designer and he was also gay. He revived many fashion trends like the cat suit, the mini skirt, tights worn as trousers. In 1982, Versace started making costumes for theatre, opera and ballet.

Then, in 1997. Gianni Versace was gunned down outside his mansion in Miami Beach by spree killer Andrew Cunanan. Thereafter, Gianni's brother, Santo was announced as the new CEO of Versace holding and Donatella was the new head of design.

Christian Dior's Haute Couture Spring-Summer 2007

This collection shows what Haute Couture really is. Famous brand, Christian Dior. I don't think you are unfamiliar with this. This collection is wonderful, one of the best I've seen so far. Take your time and savour these beautiful designs. John Galliano is superb, man.

Most of the designs feature origami, I think the theme is something Japanese. I'll be showing some back views because I think they are quite impressive. To tell you the truth, when I was viewing the collection, I was saying 'omg' to myself with every picture.

Sorry if you see replicates of the same design. I came across the half-body pics before the full one. And one more thing, they are absolutely NOT a waste of your time.

Fashion Month of January

It's Haute Couture Month!

In tie with Haute Couture Month, I have done a design of a haute couture gown.

This design features triangular stacks of burgundy satin pulled at alternate ends to create the tight and wrinkled effect. As for whether the design will work, I'm not too sure.

As Santino Rice from Season 2, Project Runway says, "Things that work on paper don't necessarily work on a body." So, I'll have to improve on my design over time.

However, posting this sketch is not all for this month. I will be adding pictures of haute couture fashion fresh off the runways of New York and Paris. Of course, there's more.

Fashion Tip #1

When wearing a skirt with pants underneath, DO NOT ever let them be of the same material.

Having the same material will only end up in camouflaging the skirt and pants, completely defeating the purpose of wearing a skirt with pants.

Example: A denim skirt should never be worn with jeans. It doesn't look nice at all.

Remember to keep this tip in mind and another fashion tip will return next month!

Letter From Me

Hey fashion lovers,

This is my first letter or rather, post. My blog isn't just a blog - it's a Fashion District in itself. However, my blog is not fully done yet. I'll still have to tie up some loose ends before everything becomes perfect, so I hope you'll bear with it.

I'll be showcasing some of my personal designs. (It's copyrighted, by the way.) So don't let me catch you replicating them otherwise you're gonna get some SERIOUS UGLY from me. (SERIOUS UGLY courtesy of Laura from Season 3 Project Runway.)

Other than just showcasing my designs, there are other interesting stuff that will probably be shown. I'll try my best to add some pictures from fashion shows. I will also be praising and criticising stars for their fashion sense. Hee hee.
